China, Russia plan to create common navigation space - media
"The key idea to build cooperation with China is creating a common navigation space from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean", said the head of GLONASS international projects department.

China and Russia plan to create a common navigation space in the near future as they launched talks on harmonization of standards for Russia’s satellite navigation system GLONASS and China’s Beidou, the Izvestia newspaper writes on Thursday.

“The key idea to build cooperation with China is creating a common navigation space from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean,” Alexander Bondarenko, the head of GLONASS international projects department, told the newspaper. “Chinese partners take interest in this concept, the issue was discussed both in a bilateral format and within an APEC working group on transport.”

The sides, according to Bondarenko, are currently discussing pilot projects to spacify further steps.

“We are considering several pilot projects linked with navigation information services to participants in trans-border businesses who use transport vehicles,” he said. “These projects embrace Russian and Chinese commercial transport which regularly crosses the border between the two countries. Jointly with our Chinese partners we are studying the market, attracting companies active in this area. We are ready to closely cooperate with organizations concerned to implement this pilot project.”

GLONASS said that Chinese partners were interested in the ERA-GLONASS emergency response system that had already been launched in Russia.
